Shiv Kumar Batalvi

Shiv's contribution to 'Punjabi' language is immense, no writer has left such a profound effect on Punjabi's in general. His romantic passionate writing has changed the way, people think about punjabi language. In the literary circle the punjabi was considered more of a crude lanuage, shiv proved them wrong. The "pangs of pain" expressed in his chosen language, Punjabi is beyond any one's imagination. Other reason behind the popularity of Shiv, is his ability to embody collective psyche of Punjabi's. Shiv's writings are true to punjabi culture and it has age old charm of classical poetry and folk songs.

Shiv has been described as arrogant, drunkard by some of his critics, some even suggest that his so called "friends" had him drink so he would exhibit his outrageous self.

I think a writer of such a caliber, where his poetry was subjected to such criticism is completely unfounded. I feel his contribution to popularize "Punjabi " language bears no doubt. He achieved this feat with flying colors.

Punjabi(gurmukhi) is a vivid lanuguage with all the ingredients to be one of best. Batalvi has contributed a lot by depicting pain in a modern novel way. There are other great contemporary writers like
Amrita pritam, Mohan Bhandar, Paash & others but Shiv has his unique way of expressing pain.

Writer
Amriat pritam, Mohan Bhandari some of Shiv Batalvi’s closest friends believes that as a lyrical poet, Shiv Kumar Batalvi has no equal in Punjabi literature. There was something extraordinary about his diction.

Dear K.B
Heartiest congrats for creating such a wonderful site.Listening Batalvi's song in his own sweet voice is like a sumptuous treat to the soul.I am a big fan of Shiv Batalvi.I was familiar only with the pain in his pen but after listening him,i came to know that he had a great pain in his voice too.It is rightly said that he was known as a"Birohan
Da Sultan"This site itself has become a literary piece.I would request u to add more poems/songs in Shiv's own voice[if u find them]I will appreciate if you add the titles of his work in punjabi also

Its amazing, finding shiv's own voice on the Net, This website is really a true tribute to spirit of Shiv Batalvi.

Shiv's contribution to punjabi psyche is immense and his art of glorification of pain bears no parallels.
